Speed's beautiful double hemisphere map of the world is surrounded by vignettes of the four elements in human form -- Earth, Water, Fire, and Air -- and star maps of the northern and southern hemispheres. In the corners are diagrams of eclipses of the sun and moon and of "The Heaven and Elements." Flanking the hemispheres are portraits of four influential circumnavigators:Van de Noort, Cavendish, Magellan, and Drake. Speed's map shows California as an island, a geographical misconception that persisted on maps as late as the 1790s.His map is also one of the earliest to show the town of Plymouth, which was founded in 1620. |
