Initiated in the 1970's with the purchase of one
small map of Boston, the Norman B. Leventhal Map
Collection is widely regarded today as one of the
finest private collections in New England. It
begins with the early exploration of the New World,
continues with the charting of the New England
coastline, and then focuses on the growth of the
City of Boston. Though private, a substantial
portion of the collection is on permanent display
in Boston. Some fifty maps depicting seventeenth
and eighteenth century Boston and the New England
Coast are on display at the Boston Harbor Hotel at
Rowes Wharf, and another thirty five eighteenth and
nineteenth century maps of Boston and its vicinity
are on display at the Hotel Meridien at Post Office
Square. Both hotels encourage visitors to view the
maps and their accompanying descriptions.
